What we are all about

heading

Calvary Chapel Somerset West is a non-denominational Christian Fellowship. We are believers from all walks of life who have come together with the common vision of growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. An emphasis is given to challenging lives to change through studying the Word of God, worshiping God in spirit and truth, and sharing the love of Jesus Christ with one another and others. Our supreme desire is to know Christ and be conformed to His image by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Calvary Chapel Somerset West is an outreach ministry of Calvary Chapel Cape Town. We are an independent church but choose to affiliate with Calvary Chapel both nationally and internationally.

We believe that the Church exists primarily for three reasons: Firstly, we exist for God's pleasure (Revelation 4:11). Secondly, we exist to equip and edify the Saints (Ephesians 4:12). Thirdly, we exist to share and declare God's plan of salvation to the world (Matthew 28:18-20).

Statement of Faith

heading

Calvary Chapel has been formed as a fellowship of believers in the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We are not a denominational church, nor are we opposed to denominations as such, only their over-emphasis of the doctrinal differences that have led to the division of the Body of Christ.

We believe that the only true basis of Christian fellowship is Christ’s Agape love, which is greater than any differences we possess and without which we have no right to claim ourselves Christians.

We believe worship of God should be spiritual. Therefore, we remain flexible and yielded to the leading of the Holy Spirit to direct our worship.

We believe worship of God should be inspirational. Therefore, we give a great place to music in our worship.

We believe worship of God should be intelligent. Therefore, our services are designed with great emphasis upon teaching the Word of God that He might instruct us how He should be worshiped.

We believe worship of God is fruitful. Therefore, we look for His love in our lives as the supreme manifestation that we have truly been worshiping Him.

We believe in all the basic fundamental doctrines of historic evangelical Christianity.

We believe in the inerrancy of Scripture, that the Bible, Old and New Testament, are the inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God and inerrant in the original writings.

We believe there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

We believe that God is the personal, transcendent, and sovereign Creator of all things.

We believe that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully human, that He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, provided for the atonement of our sins by His substitutionary death on the cross, was bodily raised from the dead, ascended to the right hand of the Father, and ever lives to make intercession for us.

We believe in the personal, visible and pre-millennial second coming of Jesus Christ to the earth. He will return with His saints and set up a kingdom of which there will be no end. After Jesus ascended to Heaven, He poured out His Holy Spirit on the believers in Jerusalem, enabling them to fulfill His command to preach the gospel to the entire world, an obligation shared by all believers today.

We believe that all people are, by nature, separated from God and are responsible for their own sin, but that salvation, redemption, and forgiveness are freely offered to all by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. When a person repents of sin and accepts Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord, trusting Him to save, that person is immediately born again and sealed by the Holy Spirit, all his/her sins are forgiven, and that person becomes a child of God, destined to spend eternity with the Lord.

We believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the Scriptures, and that they are valid for today if they are exercised within the scriptural guidelines. We as believers are to covet the best gifts, seeking to exercise them in love that the whole Body of Christ might be edified. We believe that love is more important than the most spectacular gifts, and without this love all exercise of spiritual gifts is worthless.

Distinctives

heading

Distinctives are what makes us distinctly Calvary Chapel. If we were exactly like the church across the street, it would be better to simply merge the two. Although there are churches who share many of our beliefs and practices, God has done a wonderful work of balance in the Calvary Chapel movement that does make us different in many areas.

The Preeminence and Centrality of Jesus Christ
(Col 1:18)(2 Cor 4:5)

The Church belongs to Jesus. He is the Head of the body and we are not making our own plans, but following His leading. Church is all about Jesus and we don't want anything to distract us from worshiping Him.

The Priority of Teaching the Word of God
(1 Tim 4:13)(Heb 4:12)

We are a Bible teaching ministry, teaching the whole Bible book by book, chapter by chapter, verse by verse.

The Empowering and Ministry of the Holy Spirit
(Acts 1:8)(1 Cor 12:7)

We believe that the baptism (empowering) of the Holy Spirit is essential for ministry and that the gifts of the Spirit should be practiced according to the Biblical guidelines.

The Beauty of Simplicity and Balance in Ministry
(2 Cor 1:12)(2 Tim 2:15)

We believe in keeping it simple. Although we have strong convictions, we don’t divide over non-essentials.

The Supremacy of Love
(John 13:35)(1 Tim 1:5)

We believe that without Love we can do nothing. We need to love God and His people. We need to disagree agreeably.

The Teaching and Practicing of God's Great Grace
(Heb 13:9)(John 1:16)

We believe in the daily Grace of God. We are saved by His grace and we stand in it. We also need to give it to others.

God's Model for the Church and Ministry
(Acts 2:42)(Matt 16:18)

We look to the book of Acts as the model for the church. Continuing steadfastly in the apostle’s doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayers.
